When drywall can be saved and when it cannot
Drywall is gypsum pressed between paper, and both parts react badly to water. A small, brief leak may leave a stain on a ceiling that dries out and only needs sealing and paint. Longer exposure softens the gypsum, causes the paper to delaminate and leads to sagging, crumbling edges or bubbling seams. Once drywall has lost its strength or shows mold growth on the paper, replacement is the correct repair.

Cutting out damage the smart way
Good drywall repair starts with a clean, square cut that extends past the damage to solid, dry board. We cut back to framing members wherever possible so the new piece has something solid to fasten to, and we add backing where needed. For ceilings, sagging sections are supported and removed carefully to avoid dropping wet debris into the room. Water damaged insulation above is replaced at the same time.
Many of our drywall repairs follow other restoration work: flood cuts made during water mitigation, openings made to reach hidden mold or sections removed after a fire. In those cases, we coordinate with the rest of the project so drywall goes up only after framing has been dried, cleaned or sealed as needed. Taping, texture and paint that match
The difference between a noticeable patch and an invisible one is in the finishing. We tape and mud seams in multiple coats, feather them wide and sand them smooth. Then we match the existing wall or ceiling texture, whether it is smooth, orange peel, knockdown or a hand-applied pattern. Getting texture right often takes testing on scrap board before we apply it to your wall.
Once texture is dry, the area is primed so the new surface absorbs paint evenly, then painted to match. Where exact paint matching is difficult on older walls, we may recommend painting the full wall or ceiling plane corner to corner so the color reads as one surface. We will talk through that choice with you before painting so the result looks right in every light.
